The container-handling spreader comprises a main spreader to which auxiliary ones of different and larger dimensions can be detachably secured. The main spreader (1) has at each end a thruster drive (6), and the two drives can be set at various distances apart from each other, protruding beyond the edge of the main one for an amount to suit the size of the auxiliary one used. Each drive can be mounted on the main spreader with the aid of a swing arm (8), so as to move it to and from the main one. The arm can be lockable in different angular positions, swinging through a max. angle of 90 deg.
