Flexible tubular packaging sheath consists of a cellulose hydrate hose contg. 25-70 wt.% liq., w.r.t. hose wt., and is coated, both externally and internally, with a continuous water vapour-impermeable polymer coating of addn. polymerised aliphatic cpds., contg. ethylenically unsaturated gps. in mol. Each coating copolymer pref. contains predominant amounts, esp. 60-92 wt.% vinylidene chloride and lesser quantities, e.g. 40-8 wt.% of at least 2 co-monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylate and methacrylate ester and acrylonitrile. The packaging sheaths are used as synthetic broiling- or boiling sausage skins. The sausage skin can be filled with sausage compsn. without preliminary moistening and need not be processed immediately. Impermeability is maintained after ageing, e.g. 8 weeks at room temp. or 20 hrs. at 40 deg.C.
