Process and appts. for sepg. a spent catalyst into severely and less severely contaminated fractions are claimed. The process comprises (a) introducing the catalyst into a 1st section of a vessel with concentric walls; (b) fluidising the catalyst in an upflow stream of liq. so that light (less contaminated) particles rise to the upper part of the 1st section while heavier (severely contaminated) particles remain in the lower part; (c) increasing the fluidisation rate to transfer the light particles into a 2nd section; and (d) withdrawing catalyst from the 1st and 2nd sections. The process provides effective sepn. of the light and heavy fractions in a single vessel.
