The crane hoist for a self loading container lorry has the hoist comprising a long arm (2) pivoted at the rear of the chassis and normally laid flat along the load surface. A rigid vertical section (3) is fitted to the front end of the arm to form the jib when the arm is swung over the back of the lorry to lift the container. The container has a slot through which the arm can operate without dropping the container. The slot is covered by movable flaps, or the flaps can swing up with the arms to form part of the hoist. The vehicle can be used as a crane without removing the container so that e.g. it can be used to load a trailer.
