A bread cutting machine has a feed chute (2) in which the bread to be cut is delivered from above (F1) to reach the cutting blades below. A guard is fitted at the top so that an operator facing the machine (point P) cannot lower his hands sufficiently to be cut by the blades. This guard is U shaped with two sides (8) and a plate (5) between them with its base attached to a bracket (3) projecting from the chute. This base is secured by a hinge (4) to the bracket, so that it can be folded over when not in use. Alternative designs include sector shaped sides.
