In the liquid phase epoxidation of olefins with H2O2 at 0-120 degrees C, a catalyst based on B is used and the water formed in the reaction and added with the H2O2 is removed continuously. The olefin oxides are valuable in the mfr. of urethanes, glycols, surfactants, plasticisers and numerous other prods. This is a direct, very simple process, giving very good yields and high selectivity. The catalyst used has a long lifetime. 0.0001-1 mole catalyst/mole H2O2 can be used and the water removed by (azeotropic) distn. or driven off; or 0.5-10 mole catalyst/mole H2O2 can be used if the B cpd. binds the water in the reaction mixt. Suitable catalysts are B oxides, oxy-acids and boric esters. Reaction can be carried out in an inert organic solvent in which the H2O2 is soluble.
