The surveillance device for a lift having an alarm button (6) and phone call circuit (5) connected to a remote exchange such as a nearby warder (3) or remote subscriber phone, comprises a switching circuit (4) controlled by the alarm button. The switching circuit in the absence of breakdown, connects the warder phone to a remote warder terminal through a phone line and network in order to connect the phone call circuit (5) directly to the phone line, with the local warder phone disconnected, when the alarm button is momentarily pressed. Pressing the button also activates an automatic caller (1) which automatically calls the remote warder terminal via the phase line and network. The system enables a distress call from the lift to be transmitted to a remote warder post in the absence of the local warder.
