A method of treating effluent and of producing fertilizer

Effluent composed of raw sewage and other waste waters containing grit, suspended solids, semi-colloids and solids in solution is treated by: a) separating the grit, and suspended solids having a particle size greater than about 20 microns; b) introducing ozone gas into the resulting effluent by pre-mixing said ozone gas and said effluent with an eductor; c) atomizing said ozone-treated effluent to form a mist in an enclosed chamber through which ozone is flowing; d) condensing the mist to a liquid; and e) separating from said liquid particles having a size greater than about 5 microns. A sludge containing the separated suspended solids from a) may be atomised and treated with ozone to produce a completely deodorized and sterile product, and the solids may be further treated in such a manner as to produce useful dry commercial fertilizers containing a maximum amount of non-pathogenic soil microorganisms required to sustain plant life.
