PURPOSE:To adequately perform programming work of machining, by storing a related expression of a machining condition and machining characteristic, inputting a desired machining condition, performing arithmetic operation and outputting the arithmetic result as the machining characteristic. CONSTITUTION:Related expressions of a machining characteristic and electric discharge machining conditions, with respect to, for instance, surface roughness, machining speed, electrode consumption rate and mean machining current, etc. are stored in an external memory unit. These expressions are functions of peak current and pulse width. If a desired machining condition, for instance, one of the three kinds of modes M0, is designated, its arithmetic operation is processed on the basis of the related expression. Execution contents of the mode 1 is decided for whether execution is possible or not by inputting data of a peak current Ip and pulse width t. If the input data are within a predetermined range, the execution is possible. Then the input data are substituted for the related expression to perform arithmetic operation of each machining characteristic value, and its result is output.
