Novel benzylamines of the formula I IMAGE in which the symbols R1 to R4, Hal and @ have the meaning given in Patent Claim 1, are prepared by introducing the group R2 or R4 into an appropriate secondary amine by the methods of N-alkylation. The compounds of the formula I and their physiologically tolerable acid addition salts with inorganic or organic acids have useful pharmacological properties, in particular a secretolytic and antitussive action in addition to an intensifying action on the production of the surfactant or anti-atelectasis factor of the alveoli.
