Method for adjusting pieces of timber (3), in which these timbers are conveyed individually transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction thereof through an adjusting apparatus. According to the invention, each of the timbers (3) is fed by means of friction towards a continuously running conveyor (4, 5, 6) comprising driverless endless elements (7), such as chains or belts. Arranged along the length of the conveyor (4, 5, 6) are hooks (10-25) or other braking means which, when actuated, stop the timbers (3) or restrain them against displacement in the conveying direction of the conveyor (4, 5, 6) during a processing operation, such as sawing, turning and/or longitudinal displacement, of the timber (3). The invention also comprises a device for implementing the method. By means of the method and the device, the length of an adjusting apparatus is shortened, and at the same time buffer stores are formed in a simple manner. Furthermore, a number of advantages are obtained during the execution of the said processing operations. IMAGE
