Apparatus for the shredding of vegetable materials, which is constituted by a horizontal-axis rotor provided with beaters pivotably arranged on pivot pins parallel to the axis of rotation and rotatable within a chamber one wall of which is constituted by an apron extending about a portion of the periphery and comprising an elastic element which biasses the apron towards the rotor, which elastic pressure element is constituted by at least one pneumatic jack which is connected to a large-capacity source of compressed gas by a conduit in which is arranged a valve allowing the flow of compressed gas solely from the jack towards the source and a conduit comprising a throttle element is connected in parallel with the said valve. The invention is applicable particularly to the shredding of sugar cane. IMAGE
