Process for protecting and cleaning surfaces which are subject to soiling with hydrophobic substances, a protective layer removable by means of water being applied to the surfaces before the soiling and, after the soiling, being removed together with the dirt by washing off with water which may contain detergent additives and/or alkali. The process is suitable in particular for the pretreatment of automobiles for undersealing and cavity sealing, since it makes possible simple removal of the splashes of rust preventing agent which have occurred on the painted exterior bodywork parts and on the windows.
