METHOD FOR PRODUCING COLOR REPRESENTATIONS OF QUANTIFIABLEDATA BY MAXIMIZING DIFFERENTIAL PERCEPTION OF COLORSABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method is described wherein quantifiable data which havearbitrary dynamic ranges and which vary as a function of other para-meters are represented in color. A set of subranges, without re-striction in number, representing data properties are associated witha color set in such a way that the colors are perceived to be maxi-mally differentiable by interpreters, whether human, electronic, orother, by specifically incorporating information concerning the normalor anomalous characteristics of the interpreter's color perceptionwhen determing the color set. The method further provides for therealization of color displays by directly associating the colors withdensities, transmittances, or illumination levels for negatives, posi-tives, or colored light emitting devices, whether the realization re-quires primary additive or primary subtractive hues.
