Lithium metal-terminated polymers of one or more conjugated dienes and of one or more monoalkenyl arenes are coupled by reaction with a coupling agent of the general formula IMAGE where the R groups are optionally substituted hydrocarbyl groups, R1 is hydrogen, R or OR, and R2 is an optionally substituted alkylene group which may contain one or more oxygen atoms.
