This invention is directed to a polyurethane composition for providing a unitary backing for tufted or woven carpet and to the carpet containing the polyurethane composition as a unitary backing. The composition is the reaction product of a polyurethane forming mixture comprising a relatively high molecular weight polyether polyol, a relatively low molecular weight polyol, an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate, an inorganic filler, and a catalyst for reacting the polyols with the polyisocyante or polyisothiocyanate. The five components are present in such quantities that the time required for the catalyzed, filled, unfrothed polyurethane forming mixture to reach a Brookfield viscosity of 20,000 centipose (20 Pascal-seconds) employing a number 3 spindle rotating at 6 rpm is at least 70 seconds measured from the time the catalyst is added to a mixture of the other components when the temperature of the uncatalyzed mixture is between 92'F and 94°F (33°C and 34°C).
