The radiation output of the fluorescent lamp (1) is considerably higher in the ultra-violet region than in the visible light range. It is typically a hollow rod (2) filled with mercury vapour (4), with UV radiation output of at least 5W/m pref. more than 8W/m. In order to increase the UV radiation output in the region above 360 nm, the continuous spectrum has an intensity value at 380 nm of at least 50 per cent of the maximum intensity value of the continuous spectrum. The maximum intensity value lies preferably at 360 nm. At 380 nm the intensity value amounts to more than 65 per cent of the maximum intensity value. The phosphor coating (3) of the lamp is formed in most part by aluminates. The thickness of the phosphor film has an optical density below 78, pref. about 75. The design of the lamp provides an additional health enhancing effect.
