Turbidimetric determn. of potassium in serum or plasma - using sodium tetra:phenyl-boride and protein-solubilising agent

Determn. of the K concn. in human or animal serum or plasma is effected by adding the sample to an alkaline medium contg. NaB(Ph)4 and measuring the turbidity resulting from the formation of KB(Ph)4, with the improvement that the alkaline medium also contains a solubilising agent (I) for serum or plasma proteins. (I) is pref. a buffer which also provides the required alkalinity, esp. tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane ("Tris"). The medium pref. also contains a solubilising agent for lipids, esp. a K-free soap of a higher fatty acid. Na dilaurate can serve as solubilising agent for both lipids and proteins. The process eliminates the steps of protein pptn. and centrifugation.
