The splicing tape is supplied mounted on a perforated carrier strip and is threaded to an indexing claw (31) on the top of the splicing head. The claw and drive mechanism is pivoted about an axis parallel to the head pivot axis and indexes the tape when the head is lifted higher than the normal raised position. The indexing control provides a separate operation and is not affected by pressing the head down. This allows the user to lock the head down for compact storage without damaging the tape and feed. The claw is operated by a two armed lever, with one arm linked to the claw and the other to the actuating control when the head is lifted.
