Electric cable or wire, esp. multistrand energy cable with wire insulation, opt. inner sheath and outer sheath of (un)crosslinkable polymers, has layer(s) of polymer (I) forming a vitreous superstructure in the ash at the burning temp. Pref. (I) is used for the inner sheath. It contains glass fibres, glass beads, etc. or cpds. forming a vitreous superstructure only by a chemical reaction at the burning temp., esp. B2O3 and/or SiO2, alkali(ne earth) carbonate and sulphates or nitrites. Even cables with halogen-free insulation and sheath materials perform better in a fire and function for a longer time.
