The method of consolidating soil includes compacting an area of soil to form a foundation. The method includes an impact phase where a weight is dropped one or more times on the area so as to create at least a momentary excess pore water pressure under the area. The pore water pressure is increased by dropping the weight, until it reaches 50% but does not exceed 80% of that required to produce liquefaction. The method is partic. useful for compacting silty or clay soil.
