In the process for consigning magazines, newspapers and similar products which have a small thickness in relation to their superficial extent and are supplied in the form of stacks of copies of one kind in each case which lie flatly one on top of the other in a defined number which is variable depending on the type of product, the particular predetermined number of consignments is collated from copies of various kinds by removing the number, required for one consignment, of copies of one kind in each case, from the stacks containing this kind, in dependence on characteristic data of the particular type of product, such as stack height and/or weight per the determined number and by bringing the batches thus obtained together to form a consignment. The consigning device possesses a vertically movable lifting table (14) to receive the stack (26) of products which consist of one kind in each case and lie one on top of the other precisely to a predetermined vertical position by means of a controllable setting drive.
