The plate is inserted between the refractory lining and the outer casing of the furnace to be protected. The plate consists of a frame comprising two tubes, bent and butt-welded end to end with division plates between each pair of ends. Each tube forms a passage for the flow of the heat transfer medium independently of the other. Two plates are welded to the frame and enclose between them a flat hollow chamber through which a third independent stream of heat transfer medium can flow. The plates have a long service life and are inexpensive to construct. They resist bending and buckling and can be used to give uniform cooling of the furnace wall even when serious damage to the refractory lining has occured.
