The refuse is heated in a closed enclosure so as to allow gases to be dissipated. Condensable gases are collected separately from non condensate gases. The refuse is fed into the enclosure in measured quantity and composition, by feeding it to a supply area for measurement. The area is followed by at least three further zones in the direction of motion of the refuse. The temperature in the furnace is regulated between 350 deg. and 1200 deg. C. Non condensable gases are recycled to preheat the refuse being fed to the furnace.
