A detector is mounted at the end of a shaft and is rotated by a pulley driven by a belt. The pulley has an internal thread with a coarse pitch and is maintained in position by bearing assemblies attached to the chassis. The detector is mounted above the metallic surface being inspected and is protected by a plate with an abrasive exterior and which is firmly attached to the detector. When the detector is lowered the plate protects it against any surface roughness on the metallic surface. This lowering action is provided by control of deformable parallel arms on the chassis and by a jack assembly. A collector mounted above the chassis permits connection of electrical power and signals.
