The appts. produces ultrasonic test faults of predetermined geometry on the surface of a workpiece, especially transverse and longitudinal faults on the inner and outer surface of a pipe. The appts. has two components in a cross-slide which is mounted on a base. A drive shaft and a sliding block-drive the cross-slide so that the working edge of a tool clamped in the cross-slide performs a circular movement.
