Fastening metal cap to insulator - using sheet of glass fibre between dielectric insulator and cap

The process for attaching metal caps to dielectric insulators uses a conveyor (1) carrying a series of dielectric objects past the operating point. A series of metal caps (14) is introduced above the conveyor to be pushed down on to the dielectric objects. A band (12) of glass fibre or other fibrous material passes continuously between the dielectric objects and the metal caps. Drums (24,26,27,29) carry the fibre through the machine in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the conveyor. The drums are coated in rubber, and turn freely. When the pistons controlling the vertical movement push the cap down on to the dielectric, a piece of glass fibre is automatically taken between the two parts in the joint. A plastic washer protects the dielectric from contact with the cylinder (15) which carries the metal cap.
