PURPOSE:To make it possible to prevent the leakage water by a method wherein in case the quantity of leaking water from a main shaft sealing section increases to an excessive degree, compressed air is supplied into a runner chamber so that the level of water in the chamber is lowered. CONSTITUTION:In case where the quantity of the leaking water increases due to the breakage of the water sealing section 1 during the operation of a water turbine or in case where a water level detector 4 detects a rise in the level of water pooled in a pit 3 due to the clogging of drain pipe 2, the water turbine is stopped and the guide vane 5 is closed as a first step. Next, a water level lowering air feed valve 7 directly connected to a compressed air generator 6 is opened to supply the compressed air into the runner chamber so that the level of the water in the chamber is lowered down to the surface A below the runner, to thereby prevent the leakage of the water.
