Tube bundle for a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger employs tubes which are seal welded to both sides of each tube sheet. The tube sheets are prepared by drilling and counterboring and the tubes inserted and welded in a predetermined sequence which ensures that there is adequate access to weld around the tubes on the inside faces of the tube sheets. A special handling apparatus and specially shaped electrodes are used. Crevice corrosion in the shell ride crevices around the tubes cannot occur.
