C-3082 D-3,630Abstract of the DisclosureIn a catalytic converter, a short closed-end air tube which extends across the path of theexhaust gases ahead of an oxidizing catalyst isprovided with three linear circumferentially-spaced rows of holes with the holes in one of therows facing upstream into the exhaust gases whilethe holes in the other two rows face in oppositedirections transverse to the exhaust gas flow.The holes in each of the rows are equally spacedalong the length of the tube and decrease in sizetoward the closed end so as to deliver substantiallyequal amounts of air. In addition, the holes inthe three rows are sized in relation to each otherso that the two rows of transversely directed holesdeliver substantially equal and cooperativelygreater amounts of air than the row of holesfacing into the exhaust gases.
