ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method and apparatus for angiography in whichinformation contained within multiple serial images ofcontrast medium flowing through a blood vessel is combinedto form a single image having improved vessel edge delineation.More specifically, a method is disclosed whereby a contrastmedium opaque to X-rays is injected into a blood vesseldistant from an artery section of interest, preferablyinjected into a vein, whereby the contrast medium is mixedwith blood prior to its passing through the artery section.Multiple X-ray images are obtained as the contrast mediumand blood mixture flows through the artery section. Thesemultiple images are registered with respect to each otheraccording to a landmark contained within the patient, thelandmark having a predetermined relationship to the vesselof interest. The landmark could be a bone, catheter or anyother material opaque to X-rays. Density measurements aremade with respect to each corresponding image segment orelement of the multiple images and are combined to synthesizea composite image. The synthesized image has an edge un-certainty equal to that of one of the individual imagesdivided by the square root of the total number of imagesutilized.
