The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of basically substituted phenylacetonitrile of the formula wherein D, E, F, G, H, I and K are as defined in the description, by reacting the corresponding phenylacetonitriles with compounds of formula wherein X, H, I and K have the meaning given in the description in a solid-liquid phase system in the presence of a phase transfer _- catalyst.
