An insulating rod for a section insulator or phase insulator serving for a mechanically rigid and electrically insulating connection between two contact wire sections (9) of an overhead wire, which insulator forms on a part of its length a slide track for the moving contact which makes contact with the contact wire, has a core (1') of a fibreglass-reinforced plastic as well as a sheath (3') which surrounds the core at least over a portion of its length and is made of an electrically insulating plastic. In the section forming the slide track for the moving contacts, the core (1') is provided at least over its side facing the moving contacts with a metallic coat (5'). IMAGE
