A ladle stopper comprising a rod with a refractory tip is coating based on inorganic refractory particles immersed in an organic or inorganic binder. The nature and compsn. of the particles is such that at least the surface of the coating is vitrified when contacted with the liq. metal. The stopper may be used in tundishes, ladles etc. The thickness of the vitrified layer increases with the contact tune and the layer prevents degradation of the thermal insulation and it is retained during the entire casting operation. The thermal insulation prevents solidification between the lade stopper and orifice and consequently prevents partial or total blockage of the orifice by the metal.
