Heat-resistant polystyrene, brominated on the nucleus, is prepd. by brominating polystyrene in soln. in a chlorohyrdocarbon at -20 to 40 degrees C, with previous addn. to the solvent of a nucleophilic cpd. which acts as a base towards the Lewis acid used as catalyst. The molar ratio of Lewis acid:nucleophilic cpd. is 1 : 0.02-2.
