A pneumatic percussion tool has a cylindrical body housing a free piston which strikes the head of the tool. The operation of the tool is initiated by applying a force to the cross bar which overcomes the air pressure in the annular chamber and opens the valve. Compressed air from the inlet connection then flows through the orifice and from there through the bore of the sleeve into the main cylinder to drive the piston onto the toolhead. The recoil of impact closes the valve by overcoming the force on the cross bar so that the cycle can be repeated.
