In a shaft seal with a radial, level seal gap, into which a sealing medium flows, sensors (8) for measuring the seal gap are arranged in the non-rotating seal ring (5) on the seal gap side. By means of the measured values, electromagnets (9) which are arranged in the seal housing (4) and act one against the other are electronically controlled in such a way that, in interaction with magnetisable counterbodies (10) in the non-rotating seal ring (5), they maintain a specific narrow seal gap (1).
