Portable hand drill for dowel holing in panels, walls etc., in which the tool is coupled to a rotary spindle carried in a slide. - The slide reciprocates within a frame guide, whilst the drive shaft of the drive which is coupled to the slide is offset in relation to the tool. One of two mutually perpendicular strike faces on the frame is furnished with an opening to admit the tool. Preferably the axes of the shaft, drive and tool and one strike face should run parallel to each other. The drive should power the spindle by a belt through the shaft and a pulley on the spindle. The slide should ride on two columns in the frame, with the tool disposed centrally between the columns.
