The engine has a piston (2) operating inside a cylinder (1), and a cylinder head (3) with a clearance volume (4) and a combustion space (5). The piston is fitted with a central boss (7) on its upper surface. A fuel injector (8) is fitted above the combustion space. As the piston reaches top dead centre the passage between the exhaust manifold and the combustion chamber is closed off. The exhaust manifold connects with ventilation spaces (9). There are four such spaces, each in the form of a quadrant, the boss (7) progressively closing the connections between the ventilation spaces and the combustion space.
