The electronically controlled automatic release is for vehicle seat belts in the event of an accident. The system is intended to overcome the fear of such belts trapping the occupants in the case of fire or immersion. Belt release is initiated by sensor detected shock, the initiating shock level being that calculated to arise from an accident condition. Release is delayed from the shock sensor output, the duration of the delay being calculated to ensure that the vehicle has become immobilised. Normal manual release is not affected by the system. The circuitry is powered from a protected and separate battery in parallel with the vehicle battery. The sensor detects shock or somersaulting controlling the power circuits via a delay stage. The circuit can be reset after a shock by normal manual button reconnection of the battery supply.
