In thrust bearings and in particular directed lubrication tilting pad double thrust bearings used to take the thrust loads on power turbine shafts of gas turbine power plants, the undesirable leakage of oil from the unloaded bearing can be controlled by limiting the axial movement of the unloading bearing. The axial movement of carrier (15) and attached spacer (18), which controls the clearance and thus the oil leakage rate between the housing (17) and spacers (18) is limited by a locating ring (20) attached to the carrier (15) which abuts a face (30) on the bearing housing (17), when a thrust load is applied to thrust pads (14) and associated carrier (16) and spacer (19).
