An automobile engine is fitted with a turbo-supercharger. The exhaust gases flow from a duct to the inlet of the turbine. The duct is fitted with a valve which enables exhaust gases to by-pass the turbine by being directly discharged into the exhaust duct. The valve is controlled by a diaphragm valve which is controlled partly by the pressure in the inlet manifold and partly by compressor delivery pressure. The diaphragm valve is also controlled by the needle valve actuated by the accelerator pedal in such a way that increasing movement of the pedal causes progressive closing of the valve in the exhaust duct.
