Polymer compsn. (A) contains (a) an inorganic cpd. dispersed in (b) an organic polymer produced by polymerising (c) a vinyl monomer susceptible to radical polym. in a polym. system contg. dispersed (a) in the presence of (d) one monomer. Component (d) is selected from sulphonic acid, sulphonate or carboxylic acid formula H2C=CR1XSY (I) where R1 is H, C1-20 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl deriv. or halogen; X is CONH, CONHCR2R3R4, COO(CH2)M or (CH2)N where R2 and R3 are each H, C1-15 alkyl and R4 is C1-15 alkylene and M is 1-20 and N is 0-20; Y is H, NH4, alkalic metal or (2) R6R5C=CR7COO2 where R5, R6 and R7 are H, C1-15 alkyl, COO2, halogen, phenyl or phenyl deriv. and; Z is H, NH4, alkali metal atom or cpd. of formula (II) where R8 and R9 are each H, C1-15 alkyl halogen, phenyl or phenyl deriv. Polym. of vinyl monomers by a novel, simple and easy to operate method which avoids the use of polym. initiating e.g. peroxides, in radical polym. and moisture control in anionic polym. (A) have greater interfacial affinity between organic polymer and inorganic powder than has been obtd. by conventional mechano-chemical methods, resulting in a large improvement in some polymer composite characteristics, e.g toughness.
