Horizontal axis wind turbine with front air deflector - uses screw mechanism responding to turbine speed to vary deflector position to vary amount of air directed onto turbine
Horizontal axis wind turbine with front air deflector - uses screw mechanism responding to turbine speed to vary deflector position to vary amount of air directed onto turbine
The wind energy convertor uses a vertical wheel facing the wind and regulates the air flow to the wheel, to control its power output, by variation of the air admission surface. A deflector assembly is formed as a circular plate concentric with the turbine wheel, and parallel to it. The turbine blades (2) are situated round the external periphery of the deflector. The deflector has radial blades which divert the air flow from a horizontal direction to radial flow over the vertical face of the deflector. The turbine blades are placed across this radial air flow. The deflector plate is carried on a screw (11,13) which is moved in and out from the turbine wheel by a gear mechanism (19,20) which is driven by a motor (37) supplied by contacts (28) on a flyball governor (23) driven by the turbine wheel.
