Both the brake and the accelerator of a car are controlled by a single pedal with two stages of travel. The first stage is a speed control travel for controlling the engine speed and the second stage is a brake travel for use in braking the car. A spring urges the pedal into a raised position corresponding to the maximum opening of engine fuel inlet valve. Depression of the pedal first progressively closes the valve and subsequently actuates the brake master cylinder through a linkage including a spring which absorbs that part of the pedal travel during which the valve is actuated. The pedal can be operated by a hand control and a control knob is used to enable control of the fuel inlet valve by the pedal before starting.
