Prodn. of calcium tartrate from hot soln. of wine dregs etc. - by sepg. pptd. tartrate from organic sediment in elutriation leg

A process and an installation for the prodn. of calcium tartrate from a hot soln. of residual marc extract, wine dregs etc. contg. potassium bitartrate. The soln. is mixed with an aq. slurry of calcium cpds. to convert the bitartrate into tartrate of calcium, thereby eliminating tartrates from the soln. The calcium tartrate is pptd. into an elutriation leg in the base of a processing vessel in which the mixt. is treated. The ppte. is extracted, washed and dried. The wash water, together with mother-liquor drawn off at the top of the vessel, is reinjected at the base of the vessel below the accumulating precipitate. This rising current entrains organic sediments and return them to the upper part of the vessel. Pref. the headspace of the vessel is connected to a vacuum pump which reduces pressure in the vessel. This produces adiabatic expansion and partial evapn. of the water and cools the mixt. in the vessel. The process eliminates disadvantages associated with previous systems, viz: costly sepg. cyclones, and cooling with added water which increases the volume of effluent to be handled.
