The headgear comprises a combined protective helmet and respiratory mask (3) linked to autonomous respiration apparatus (2). The helmet is formed in a material having high thermal resistance and shock resistance, and is designed to protect the entire head. The helmet is in two separable parts (16,17) joined by a hinge (18) situated at the top of the helmet, and locked by a clamp (19) at the bottom of the helmet. The face plate (5) of the helmet is formed from a transparent plastics material having good shock resistance and resistant to becoming opaque if hit by a projectile. The interior face of the helmet has a rim which follows the face contours, and a respirator mask (10) covering mouth and nose. A regulator (11) couples the respirator mask to a gas supply. The lining of the helmet is inflated (13) to provide shock absorption. A battery operated light is provided above the visor.
