A catch comprising a lever having a T-cross section mounted to rotate about an axis extends at right angles through the longer part of its T-section. The lever is wider in the region of this axis and has a slot which may slide over a shaft which forms the 'striking plate' of the lock. The slot is arranged to form a small part of a spiral around the axis of rotation so that as the lever is rotated, the shaft is either drawn in closer or pushed away from the axis. In the first stage of lever movement, the shaft is not moved so that it is effectively locked in place.
