The fastening device for a bracelet, has two end parts (13,14) of the bracelet permanently connected by a buckle plate with two end components (10,11) each hingedly connected to a middle component (16) and to a respective one of the parts of the bracelet. The two end parts can be moved together and apart, for shortening and lengthening the bracelet, by moving the buckle plate components respectively into and out of a closed configuration in which the end components each lie sandwiched between the middle component and a respective end part of the bracelet. Retaining devices (20) are provided for releasably retaining the buckle plate components in the closed configuration, and in a preferred form such means releasably connect the adjacent ends of the two end parts of the bracelet.
