The apparatus comprises a rotor (13) disposed in a duct (12) between an air intake (3) and the engine, and having a hub (14) with radial blades (23). The latter are at an angle to the plane normal to the rotor axis A-A and so spaced apart that each blade sweeps through the space separating it from the next adjacent blade in a time which is less than the time taken by foreign objects carried along by incoming air to flow past the rotor. A chamber (49) collects foreign objects thrown by the rotor through an opening (50). The rotor can be driven by a tip turbine (42) supplied with air from the engine compressor or from atmosphere.
